1956 CLASS NEWS

Our condolences to Willis Callaway, in the death of his wife, Ann Callaway.

Today members of our organization gathered in Conway and had the honor and privilege of paying tribute to Ann Woodruff Callaway, BSN, RN and her dedication to the nursing profession.

While in Little Rock, Ann attended Temple Baptist Church, where she met the love of her life, Willis Callaway. They married the following year, while she completed her final year of nursing school, graduating at the top of her class. Their marriage became a beautiful testament to love, faith, and partnership, lasting 58 years. Built on a strong Christian foundation, their life together was grounded in shared faith, mutual support, and a steadfast commitment to God and one another—a true example of the same compassion and dedication that defined Ann’s nursing career.

Nursing is more than a career—it’s a calling of the heart. True compassion and unwavering dedication come from deep within, making nursing not just a profession but a part of who we are.

Ann was exceptionally smart and dedicated. She graduated at the top of her class.  Ann was encouraged by a friend to apply for a school nurse position in Little Rock—an opportunity she embraced wholeheartedly. It was in school nursing where Ann found her true passion. She loved her role deeply and was recognized as “School Nurse of the Year” in 1992. For twenty years, she served at several elementary schools in Little Rock as their beloved nurse. Nursing was never just a job—it was a true calling she fulfilled with passion and purpose.

Message from Willis:

Thank you.  She is in a much better place.  I don't want her back in the health condition she was in.  She was in bed lying on her back for the past couple of years,

in agonizing pain most of the time. She had diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis and on oxygen, nerve damage from a previous herniated disc and dementia. Much of the

time she needed help to just get out of bed. It was tough to see her in this condition after the active life she enjoyed as a Little Rock school nurse.  Thankfully, all

of our family were in the nursing home room as she passed away with our son holding her hand.  She will be missed.

Our deep condolenses to Midge Brown, who lost her daughter, Laura, on July 12, 2025, to pancreatic cancer.  Laura was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. She is survived by her husband, Richard DuPree Brown, whom she married on September 19, 1986; her children, Justin Brown (Shelby) and Lauren Grace Brown; her granddaughter, Sarah Brown; her mother, Midge Brown Rush; her brothers, Larry Rush (Kelly) and Lee Rush (Kim); along with many other loving family and friends.  Her Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 17, 2025, 3:00 p.m. at First Methodist Church, Pine Bluff.  The family will greet friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
