THROW BACK THURSDAY - STORIES FROM SAM PECK HOTEL

In 1957, during the Little Rock school integration crisis, several visiting journalists stayed at the Sam Peck Hotel.
Years later, Harry Reasoner, a journalist and commentator for CBS TV News, while narrating a segment on the program
Sixty Minutes about the world’s famous hotels, at the conclusion said that his favorite hotel was the Hotel Sam Peck in
Little Rock, Arkansas.
Henrietta Peck took her twelve-year-old granddaughter, Capi, to New York in 1965. While waiting to enter a
Broadway theater, someone tapped Mrs. Peck on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me. Mrs. Peck, you won’t remember
me, but I stayed in your hotel in 1957 when I was covering the school crisis for NBC TV. I’m John Chancellor.”
Capi reports that Henrietta was overwhelmed that he would remember her and recognize her, away from her
usual locale, and think she would not remember him. They had a nice conversation about the hotel and she was
flattered by his compliments.

Jimmy Martin has a new Cell Phone Number. (913) 292-4833. Give him a call sometime. Ronnie Smith and I called him recently and he really enjoyed
hearing from us. And he sounded great. Although his sister, Mary, lives in Texas, she still stays in touch often. She tells me that his daughters, Susan
and Becky, check on him often. His short term memory is lacking a little, but Mary says his long term memory is still alive and well!
