THROW BACK THURSDAY - FOOD NEEDED AT A FOOD BANK
PLUS CLASS NEWS
So, I spoke to people getting food at a food bank and here are some things I learned from those in need:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
In all the years I have donated food at the Holidays, I bought what I thought they wanted, but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family this Thanksgiving or Christmas, maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me!

1956 CLASS NEWS
Yes, it's Janis McAtee. Her son just posted this on FB to let us know that fortunately they have ended up in the right hospital with the right doctor who has performed back surgery on Janis last Tuesday.
Hey y’all. Just wanted to share what’s been going on with Mom. Since coming home from Virginia last month, she’s been suffering a rapid loss of mobility, coordination, and strength accompanied by a spreading and intensifying pain in her extremities. In a matter of weeks she lost the use of her hands, feet, arms, and legs. Her PCP had already ordered a series of images that ruled out stroke, so she was scheduled to see a neurologist next week. Over the weekend, I grew more alarmed by the quick advance of her symptoms so I mustered my inner Person with AIDS advocate and phone the PCP yesterday morning. They advised we report to the Adventist Emergency Department. It took all day but by 7pm they had found the cause in an MRI of her spinal column. Apparently she herniated a disc in the last eight weeks that exacerbated a preexisting stenosis of the cervical spine caused by arthritis. By the end of the night we had met the neurosurgeon, Dr. Ball, who says he can correct this problem in an hour-long surgery schefuled for 5:30 pm today. On my way up to her room this morning, I rode the elevator with a woman in a fancy motorized wheelchair. When I asked them how they were doing, she gleefully told me that she was getting her back fixed today and that she would be an inch taller afterwards. "Dr. Ball?" I asked. "Yes!" she said, "and I love him. My doctor had back surgery from him and recommended him very highly.” That has greatly encouraged us. Mom’s in a good mood, albeit famished, and ready to get this done. She sends her love to everyone, and hopes to see you all soon, standing on her own two feet.
